Micro-Hardness of the Extracted Teeth at Water Fluoridation Area in Korea

Abstract
|
|
|
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of preventing dental caries by water fluoridation.
Methods: The sound teeth, which were extracted in local residents, who dwelled in the water fluoridation and non-fluoridation area for more than 5 years, were divided into 3 groups of children (6-12 years old), youth (20s-30s), and manhood (40-50s), and classified into incisors and molars. Teeth with 107 pieces for the experimental group and 79 pieces for the control group were used.
Results: As for enamel micro-hardness of a primary, the water fluoridation stood at 354.02±51.03 Hv, thereby having been indicated to be higher than 296.14±42.90 Hv in the water non-fluoridation area, resulting in having shown statistically significant difference (p＜0.05). In the dentin micro-hardness, the water non-fluoridation area stood at 53.01±6.90 Hv, thereby having been indicated to be higher than 52.57±7.82 Hv in the water fluoridation area. However, there was no statistically significant difference. As for enamel micro-hardness of a permanent tooth, the water fluoridationstood at 380.73±52.60 Hv, thereby having been indicated to be higher than 331.31±40.83 Hv in the water non-fluoridation area, resulting in having shown statistically significant difference (p＜0.05).
Conclusion: As the above experimental results, the water fluoridation showed a rise in hardness of primary tooth enamel and of adult permanent tooth, thereby having been able to be confirmed to have effect on preventing caries. Accordingly, it was considered to be likely able to be used as the valid ground of evaluating effect of water fluoridation in the future.
